Migration Period - Early Medieval Times - 400 - 800 A.D.

Merovingian silver-inlaid strap-end

Fine example of the silver- / brass-inlay technique mastered by merovingian artists.

Later wrongly refered to as "damasquinure" or "Silbertauschierung" by renaissance humanists who believed that this technique was not known in Europe before
the Crusades (as reference to Damascus), the use of silver or brass wires inlaid on the surface of iron elements to create ornamentation requires
high precision skills. It was also known to, and massively used by the Romans, on military and household artefacts.

The ornamentation mirrors the style of moulded bronze elements of the same period.
